Surgically Assisted Orthodontics
Orthognathic Surgery and Orthodontics
Patient Testimonial
Corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) treats the abnormalities of the facial bones. Jaw growth is a continuous process throughout childhood and into the teens. Occasionally the growth of the upper and lower jaws can be different causing a discrepancy between size and function. These abnormalities, left untreated, cause difficulty associated with chewing, talking, sleeping and other routine activities leading to abnormal or accelerated break down of the teeth and jaws.
In conjunction with orthodontic treatment, jaw surgery will improve jaw function as well as overall facial appearance. Orthognathic surgery (corrective jaw surgery) may be unnecessary if orthodontic treatment does not correct the problem at an early age. With the latest advances in orthodontics, this is less often the case. Only non-growing patients are candidates for corrective jaw surgery.

Wilkodontics and Accelerated Orthodontic Tooth Movement
One of the latest advances in Orthodontics for Adults is the Wilcodontics approach to treatment. With Wilcodontics, most adults can complete their entire orthodontic treatment in only 3 to 8 months instead of the typical 18-24 months with standard orthodontic care. Ask Dr. Merz about this treatment which is done in cooperation with a Periodontic Specialist.
