If you are looking for an excellent orthodontist who offers two phase treatment for orthodontic care, you should visit us at Torrey Pines Orthodontics. Our expert orthodontist, Dr. Mary Lynn Merz, will be able to assess your child’s needs and determine whether two phase treatment is needed, or if your child should simply get braces San Diego in their teens.

Today it is recommended that children have their first visit at our orthodontic practice around age 7 to determine whether or not they will benefit from two phase treatment.

When a child has interceptive orthodontic care, it is considered to be phase one of a two phase treatment approach. The child will first have certain types of interceptive orthodontic work performed between the ages of seven and ten and then the child will receive their regular braces San Diego before high school and before they are in their early teens.

The benefit of a child having two phase treatment is that there are certain orthodontic situations which can be easily corrected while a child’s jaw is still growing. However, if these corrections are not made at an early date, the child will need to have much more involved orthodontic care later on, and the child may also need to have tooth extractions during their braces treatment in their teens.

If it is found that a child’s mouth will not be large enough to accommodate all of their permanent teeth, interceptive orthodontic treatment can include treatment with an arch expander which will influence your child’s jaw growth to allow room for all of the permanent teeth to erupt. If your child loses his or her baby teeth early or late, it may be a sign that they need some type of interceptive orthodontic care. Other signs that early orthodontic care may be helpful include if your child is mouth breathing, has trouble chewing, or his or her teeth appear crowded at the ages of seven or eight.
